Why I'm raising Money: What and who are Northwest Blood Bikes. Lancs and Lakes

We provide a Free, voluntary out of hours transport service to our local NHS hospitals by carrying urgent and emergency blood, platelets, samples, donor breast milk, patient notes, theatre equipment, in fact anything that can be carried by motorcycle, between hospitals that is urgently required.
We provide this service through the night 7 days a week, covering days at the weekends and Bank Holidays enabling hospital funding to be better spent on patient care.

As a group of volunteers we either:
Volunteer as a controller who answer calls from the hospitals and dispatch the on duty riders to pick up and deliver the hospitals requirements and coordinate relays on long distance jobs between out of county hospitals and their laboratories
Or
Volunteer as a Rider to collect and deliver urgently needed whole blood, platelets, samples for analysis, medication, patient notes, small medical instruments, donor breast milk, etc.

Our area is classified as the Northern Area and we work between Furness General Hospital, Westmoreland Hospital, Millom Hospital, Lancaster Royal Infirmary, Care Homes in Grange, Ulverston and Barrow and the Furness Renal Centre in Ulverston.

We do this to save the Hospitals in our area money. If we did not provide this “out of hours” service the hospitals would have to pay for taxis to transport samples etc. This means the money can be spent on better patient care, or to provide newer, up to date, specialist equipment.

North West Blood Bikes is a non-profit making charity staffed completely by volunteers who give up their time to provide the service.
The Charity receives no payments for the services it provides to the NHS and absolutely no central funding.
Provided the charity funds are sufficient then our riders and drivers are able to reclaim a contribution towards their fuel cost when using their own vehicles to make deliveries on behalf of the NHS Trusts supported.
Also running a service like North West Blood Bikes Lancs & Lakes is costly, and with the fleet of dedicated vehicles also comes maintenance, motor vehicle insurance and of course fuel.
All of our funding comes from fundraising at events and sponsors, both personal and corporate.

I’m sure all of us have either needed help from our hospitals, personally or within our own families so I’m asking for your support to this brilliant charity.

Yours aye Nobby.

All donations are made to the Keswick to Barrow Walk Charity. A percentage of this donation will be used to fund the cost of the walk and support local charities in South Cumbria/North Lancashire. The remainder of the donation will be donated to the Walker's (Team) nominated charity(ies) as listed below.
