Nominating a Charity or good Cause
K2B fundraising was primarily established to raise funds for local charities in the Barrow and South Cumbria area, many of which apply for K2B funding each year. However, recognising the increasing number of non-local teams participating, the nominations process was introduced to enable teams to nominate charities from their locality to benefit from their efforts.
The K2B strives to keep costs to a minimum, seeking maximum funding from ‘corporate sponsors’ in order to minimise overheads and maximise benefit to the causes that need it most. Accordingly we tend to favour those smaller local charities who have lower overheads and who are visibly active within the community. Teams are therefore asked to consider this factor when submitting nominations.
The K2B nominations process has been in operation for several years and its success is down to those nominating teams following stringent guidelines. Central to the process is the understanding that all teams will try and generate as much sponsorship as possible, all of which must be returned to the K2B committee. Under no circumstances should any monies be donated direct to charities.
For charities wishing to register, please read the guidance below, and fill in our Charity Registration form.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do we nominate?
After the walk, team co-ordinators can re-visit the website and will find that the team entry button has been replaced by "Nominate a Charity". You’ll be able to use your original ID and password to log on and input your nomination online. The nomination must be made only by the team co-ordinator and will not be accepted if either full details of the charity are not included i.e. name, address reg no.etc. or the nomination is written on the sponsorship form. For non-Cumbrian charities the team co-ordinator should state a preference to present the charity cheque direct from the team or to leave it to the K2B Committee to make the presentation. All nominations must be received by end September in the K2B year to be considered.
How many nominations can we make?
Normally one per team. However, if the team has raised an exceptional amount of sponsorship, one nomination can be made for every £500 raised.
Who can I nominate to benefit?
Ideally, your nomination should be a recognised registered charity. However, the K2B Committee also supports causes which are not necessarily registered charities but which do provide a service to the community or assist with the development and well-being of children or the vulnerable. In such cases, the nominator should include a note with the team’s sponsorship money which will be forwarded to the K2B Appeals Officer for consideration.
Why can’t I send the monies to the charity direct?
Because the K2B needs to process your sponsorship through its accounts and – because the event is self funded – take its costs from the monies before agreeing the charity distribution.
What costs do the K2B have?
The main costs cover for the provision of food and drink for the walkers. Other costs cover materials to maintain the infrastructure of the walk, (IT equipment, new signage etc.) and consumables (stationery etc.) There are NO costs deducted for committee expenses or time which are all given voluntarily.
How much will my nominated charity receive?
Values cannot be guaranteed but - if approved - your nominated charity should receive an award reflecting a significant proportion of the sponsorship raised by your team, allowing for costs deduction and balancing (with similar charity awards). Much depends on the number of charity applications and the total monies raised that year, so values cannot be guaranteed. We can advise however, that in past years nominated charities have generally received a minimum of two thirds of the sponsorship money raised by the nominating team, plus Gift Aid. The maximum amount that we will deduct from any team's sponsorship money is £600.
When will my nomination be considered?
The K2B Committee meets every October to consider applications and nominations to benefit from the year’s proceeds. All successful beneficiaries will be announced at the annual K2B Awards Evening held in early November each year. Cumbrian Charities / Causes will be invited to collect their awards at this event. Non-Cumbrian awards are forwarded to the charity direct unless requested by the nominating team to be forwarded to them for presentation.
What will each charity receive?
Each award package includes a K2B Cheque for the approved amount, A large dummy cheque (for presentation), K2B posters and (where applicable) a Gift Aid envelope.
Where to send your Nominations
Team co-ordinators of participating teams can use the online charity nomination form, which becomes active after the walk in place of the team entry page, by logging in with their own ID and Password.
